How do I ask someone to the Sadie Hawkins Dance?

I want to ask a guy I barely know to Sadies, but I dont know how. Should I not bother, since he just broke up with his girlfriend? When I see him in the hall I say hi and hug him and he hugs me back, but he's a year or two older than me and Im terrified he'll say no and then it'll be awkward when I see him, which is almost every day. Help!!
