Did Nixon used the Southern strategy and if so, how did he use it?

The Southeast has always been more conservative then the Northeast part of the US. JFK was left of center and LBJ was seen even more so with his Great Society welfare legislation. Worse, the antiwar demonstrators were seen as being Democratic liberals. Nixon used his conservative credentials to appeal to the Southern voters.
